Eve Hurley is the co-founder and visionary of Peer Peer.i.od for girls. Ms Hurley, the eldest of ten siblings and big sister to six sisters had a less than satisfactory experience when she began her first monthly period at the age of eleven. After beginning menses at school and staining her beautiful dress, and without any prior knowledge of what her monthly period would be like, she went to a teacher convinced she had been harmed. From that teacher she received assurance she had not been harmed, a Modess sanitary napkin, and a call to her mother to pick her up from school. Her mother, a wonderful mom, told her, "you are on your period, keep your private area clean, the sanitary napkins are kept in the linen closet, and stay away from boys." Eve did all of those things, still unsure as to why she was going through this traumatic experience and even more, why was it going to happen every month for it seemed the rest of her life. Armed with very little information and a mother who was not very forthcoming on the subject, she decided it would be her responsibility to make sure her sisters' experience would not be as traumatic as her own. This was the foundation of Peer Peer.i.od for girls. Years later, Eve had her own daughter, Gina, and not only would she be prepared and educated, she would also feel that getting her monthly period was an event to be celebrated. So in honor of the celebration, Eve developed a gift basket filled with personal hygiene and pampering items relevant to puberty and the transition into womanhood. This proved to be a success because Gina began menses at twelve years old with the knowledge of what to expect and practically stress-free. Eventually, Eve began doing the same thing for nieces and family friends because she wanted every girl she knew to be prepared, educated and confident about starting their monthly period. This led to a promising gift basket business that started in the early 1990's, which meant other girls in the community had the benefit of being prepared about their monthly period.
Gina Huff, co-founder and President of Peer Peer.i.od for girls, was in college in 1989, pursuing her degree in Psychology. At that time, she encouraged her mother, Eve, to begin a gift basket company selling the basket she had created for her when she began menstruation. Eventually, Gina received her degree in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Human Service Administration. After working for more than thirteen years in social service with women and children, predominantly adolescent girls, she decided that she wanted to tackle the many issues facing the girls in a different way. She wanted to work with girls before they became teen moms, before they made choices that would possibly decrease their chances for having the best quality of life. This is the moment when the two decided to form Peer Peer.i.od for girls. Together, they would target girls ages 9-16 to prepare and educate them about their first monthly period, puberty, and the many changes they would experience during this stage in their lives. They would also teach girls about proper hygiene better health. To date, the Peer Peer.i.od for girls company has talked to over 2,000 girls about preparing for their monthly period and offering them the "My First Monthly Period Preparation Kit," no longer a gift basket, but a beautifully packaged pink box equipped with everything a girl needs to celebrate the transition into womanhood. |
