Some participating schools give their girls an opportunity to win one of the Preparation Kits they purchased by writing an essay, describing what they learned. Here are some of our winning essays.
J. Griggley 5th Grade, Alex Haley School I learned that when you become on your period it doesn't hurt. Some girls just feel fine while others may get cramps, feel bloated or even have a little pain around their breast. This is why you should drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day, eat fruits and vegetables, exercise 30 minutes a day or use pain medication. Also, you can swim when you are on your period, but you have to use a tampon. Tampons can be safe, but if you use your tampons improperly, it can cause Toxic Shock Syndrome. You are not always irritable when you get on your period. Girls may feel more nervous than usual. This is normal. What is not normal is using your period as an excuse for bad behavior. You should not snap on your friends, you cannot say whatever you want, and you can't be mean to your family. No slamming doors, stomping on the floor, having a bad attitude at your family and cursing. Your friends will not be able to notice that you are on your period if you don't wear clothes that are too tight. If you have on a sanitary pad and your pants are tight, you increase the chance of someone seeing your imprint in your clothes. Do not forget to change your sanitary pad or tampon every three hours. When you forget to change regularly, you increase your chance of having an odor or staining your clothes. Sometimes you may have to change more often depending on your blood flow. You may not talk about your friends if they have an odor. Just tell them politely if they have an odor or if they have a blood stain. Just tamp them on the shoulder and tell them. If no one ever told you about your period and you found out you became on your period do not panic. Just tell someone at home and ask them to talk to you about it and about all your needs for your period. Peer Peeriod for girls would like to thank all of the girls who wrote and submitted essays. We especially would like to thank the parents, aunts and mentors who have made their young ladies feel special. |
