Some participating schools give their girls an opportunity to win one of the Preparation Kits they purchased by writing an essay, describing what they learned. Here are some of our winning essays.

5th Grade, Alex Haley School

From reading this passage, I've learned that during your puberty, you could experience different emotions and moods. You could be happy one minute and sad the next. This is the result of hormones. Hormones are chemicals produced by your brain that tell you about different parts of your body so they can grow and mature. They could also control and develop your reproductive system.

I also learned that your period isn't an illness. A girl's period is a natural and healthy function that girls and older ladies will have. Some girls complain about cramps and pain in their lower thighs. Some girls will have tenderness abound their breast area. I learned that if you drink six to eight glasses of water, eat fruits and vegetables, and exercise, it would help you to reduce any discomfort you may have.

You can go swimming in a tampon, but not in a pad and you have to be careful with a tampon because it could cause a serious medical condition that could cause Toxic Shock Syndrome. Some people might get on your nerves more than usual but that is normal, but I know that you can't go off on people and use your period as an excuse. I also know that you can't eat a lot of chips and stuff; you can't eat a lot of salt.

I also learned that you need to keep your hygiene up. You shouldn't wear tight clothing because if your pad moves out of place people will see the imprint of your pad. You should always take a pad and a tampon with you wherever you go so that way you could be prepared if you go on your period. And make sure that you change your pad every three hours. Make sure that you dress appropriately at all times and wherever you go. Take care of yourself, your body and your attitude so nobody will know you are on your period.

Peer Peeriod for girls would like to thank all of the girls who wrote and submitted essays. We especially would like to thank the parents, aunts and mentors who have made their young ladies feel special.
